Triad provided testing and construction observation services for the rehabilitation of the Tuscarora Tunnel. The scope of services included the following:
1. Concrete:
Cast-in-Place:
- Prior to concrete placement, Triad observed the formwork and reinforcing steel to ensure compliance with project plans.
- During concrete placement, Triad documented the concrete supplier, placement and consolidation methods, and weather conditions at the time.
- Composite samples were obtained.
- Testing of the composite samples included Slump (ASTM C 143), Air Content (ASTM C 231), and Temperature (ASTM C 1064), along with additional tests like unit weight and yield.
- Compressive strength specimens were molded and transported to the laboratory for testing.
2. Project Management and Engineering Consultation:
- A Triad Project Manager provided ongoing engineering consulting and technical recommendations for field construction issues.
- The Project Manager attended progress meetings, coordinated scheduling of field visits, reviewed daily field reports and lab data, and handled general project administration.
3. Laboratory Testing:
Concrete Laboratory Testing:
- Compressive strength testing was conducted on cylindrical concrete specimens.
- Other specified tests were also performed as required.
All testing and observation were supervised by a geotechnical engineer licensed in Pennsylvania. A daily written report was provided for each day of testing or monitoring.
This comprehensive testing and observation ensured that all construction activities for the Tuscarora Tunnel rehabilitation were in compliance with the project specifications and standards.
